Career Objective
I have a strong desire and passion for teaching at the college level. In all of the classes I have taught, I have connected well with undergraduate students and have a passion to see them succeed. The connection to the students, course material and desire for student success translate into a more meaningful learning experience for students, and ultimately, success in life, thus it is my goal to continue teaching and sharing my knowledge and experiences at the collegiate level, including teaching in the Middle East. By teaching and sharing experiences with those outside the United States, I believe that in sharing experiences in a classroom can fill a gap where misunderstandings and lack of knowledge about those in other parts of the world exists now with a better understanding of different cultures and peoples. I have been teaching an anthropology course for the past three years entitled “America’s diverse cultures. I have discovered that many students do not have a good understanding of how to view the world through the eyes of those who are different. At the end of the semester, students better understand that we are all different, yet in many ways the same. I believe this knowledge can have a similar impact across international borders. Because of my experiences of traveling while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, I have knowledge of many different cultures outside the context of the United States. Although my professional objectives are to continue researching the Kurdish community in Nashville, Tennessee, I also want to continue my research with the Kurdish people in the Middle East region. My original academic path was in communication; however, I am now a cultural anthropologist. Cultural anthropology offers more flexibility when conducting research within the Kurdish community, as well as in an international context. I also bring my fieldwork with the Kurdish people and many decades of lived experience that can be applied to many areas within the social sciences.
